Somehow, I was running 6.5.03 already. We couldn't figure out how, but it seems that I did the upgrade from 6.4 a while back with no issue. Anyhow, when we encountered this issue, the point is, I was already running 6.5.03, not 6.4.

Now, I've checked, and the firmware is indeed correct, if I'm reading the properties correctly (see below).

Since I'm 9 hours behind Germany, interaction has been slow. I was up, talking with them until 3 am, and then I had to pass out. I'll see what they say tonight, but I suspect you are at least one step ahead.

One thing I'd link to add to this thread's conclusion.
In the further communication with the customer it turn out his scanner had been defective.
