I have just received my SilverFast 5.5 Ai software for my Nikon 8000 ED scanner and I have done the IT8 calibration exactly as described in Ian's document.
Whenever I perform a 48 bit HDR scan and open in Photoshop 6, it quite rightly says do you want to convert the embedded profile to the working space etc, so I konw that Silverfast is embedding my calibration profile.
If I open the same file in HDR however it does not recognise the embedded profile and just says "None" I have also set up HDR using Ian's document, so any ideas would be much appreciated.

You can only be sure if Photoshop tells you that it is the SF_Nikon....... profile (or similar. I'm assuming from the above part of your you message that this is the case. However the next part suggest otherwise

Which document did you use and what are your setting in SilverFast Ai CMS dialog? To get the scanner profile embedded it must have None for Scanner Internal and your scanner profile must appear in the popup labelled Scanner (Transparent) in SilverFast Ai. Do you scan the 48bit image directly into Photoshop, save and then open in HDR or do you scan to file and open in HDR????

Ian,

Many thanks for your very proactive response!
Photoshop does correctly recognise my embedded profile and and correctly identifies it as "SF_T (Nikon LS -8000)" and asks me if I would like to change it to my working profile (Adobe RGB (1998)

My CMS settings are as follows: -
Scanner -> Internal <None>
Internal -> Monitor Automatic
Internal -> Output RGB
Scanner (Transparent) SF_T (Nikon LS-8000)
Internal Adobe RGB (1988)
Output/Printer <None>
Rendering Intent Perceptual
Embed ICC Profile checked
Profile to embed SF_T (Nikon LS-8000)

Regards,

Simon

Since you ar going to edit the image within HDR you would leave it with the scanner profile embedded (top radio button engaged in PS convert to profile dialog). What you are getting is strange and usually only occurs if Photoshop has been allowed to strip the profile out of the image. When you save the image make sure that you have Embed Profile selected and that it remains the scanner profile.

My CMS settings are as follows: -
Scanner -> Internal <None>
Internal -> Monitor Automatic
Internal -> Output RGB
Scanner (Transparent) SF_T (Nikon LS-8000)
Internal Adobe RGB (1988)
Output/Printer <None>
Rendering Intent Perceptual
Embed ICC Profile checked
Profile to embed SF_T (Nikon LS-8000)

The above are correct nd given that Photoshop sees the profile all seems well at that end.

In HDR CMS dialog ensure that Scanner Internal is set to Use Embedded Profile.

Ian,
I have double checked all my settings and still no joy.
I am now fairly certain that HDR is working correctly as if I open a raw file created with my Agfa Duoscan f40, HDR correctly recognizes the Agfa profile.
I have now come to the conclusion that there is something about the profile created from the IT8 target that HDR does not recognize, and hence say's "None"

I am not sure where to go from here.

Simon

Simon,

It might well be a bug in the Nikon version of SilverFast, although why it works one way and not the other is strange.

Ian,

Many thanks for your help. What is the best method for reporting Bug's to SilverFast.

Simon

Will someone from Silverfast admit that the problem identified in this thread is a genuine bug with the Nikon 8000 version of 5.5 Ai.
I urgently need to know, as currently HDR is useless to me!.

Simon
