Version 6.4.3r9 Bug?

I tried version 6.4.3r9 last night. All the previews where light as though the exposure was wrong.

Checking the CMS options there was a profile displayed for the scanner where previously there was none (something like ?Nikon LS 4000?). It was greyed out and could not be set back to ?none?.

I reverted back to 6.4.3r8, and everything went back to normal.

What gamma gradation setting are you using?

I normally use 2.2. Seting it back to the defaut 2.0 only made a slight difference as one would expect.

I had done a complete uninstall of 6.4.3r8 before loading 6.4.3r9 so it should not have been any left over preferences.

What if you lower it to 1.8?

I didn't try 1.8. (Version 6.4.3r9 is not currently installed.)

The prescans were very light. They were still too light even when the Brightness in NegaFix was set to -3.0!

Version 6.4.3r9 Bug with Nikon

I have the same problem on upgrade but support not coming through with anything useful - did you ever get v9 running?

I have not put any more effort into trying to get 6.4.3r9 going. Where there are few or no new features in 6.4.3r9 that benefit my model of Nikon scanner so it is hard to justify persisting.

I had been struggling to understand why I didn?t have a Picture Settings window. This turned out to be that you only get this function with the Studio version, which Support explained after two weeks.

I had downloaded the demo version of 6.4.3r9. The ?Check for updates? from within SilverFast was not detecting a new version so soon after the announcement of 6.4.3r9.

Others have suggested using the ?Check for updates? rather than downloading the demo when 6.4.3r9 has introduced misbehaviour.

Do you also have a profile applied that you cannot disable on the colour management screen?

Report back if you get an explanation from Support.

Thanks Mike.

Like you I reverted to v8 and do not recall the answer to your question on v9. However, (if and) when support reply I will revert.

Bigger Problems with 6.4.3r9

I have the same problem with 6.4.3r9. Very light cyan colored prescans. In fact the prescan still has the appearance of a negative. I've discovered by accident that the "autofix" slider is greyed out and cannot be moved. I have also noticed that if I change the setting on the General tab to Negative Direct instead of Negative the prescan looks like it should.

After checking this forum and seeing that others have had this same problem, I decided to uninstall r9 and go back to my previous verion, which was r6. Unfortunately, r6 will not longer start up. I get application launcher errors. I uninstalled r6 again and this time deleted all files and folders I could find for my Nikon scanner. That includes the files in Adobe Photoshop. Unfortunately, I get the same results.

Now I have an expensive scanner and expensive software and I can't get either to work. When will I ever learn my lesson about software upgades?

I sent an email to tech support, last evening and have not had a reply yet. I don't care about r9, I just want to get my old version running again. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get r6 running again, please advise. The only reason I have not tried r8 is I never downloaded that release, and now there does not appear to be anyway to get it.

Thanks
Dennis

Just received the following response from tech support. It solved all my problems, so you might want give it a try.

Please go to

C:\documents and settings\username\application data\lasersoft imaging

and delete the ?prefs?- folder from there.

?username? is whatever username you have on your computer. The ?application data?- folder is hidden by default, so please enable ?view hidden files and folders? in your ?folder options? in case the folder is not shown.

Then, please restart Silverfast.

It is a quite Saturday afternoon, so I decided to give installing 6.4.3r9 anther go.

I thought it went better this time. The very light prescan problem I was having after the first installation attempt did not reoccur initially, but after a wider range of negatives it was in fact still occuring. SEE CORRECTION POST. An input profile still appears that I cannot modify.

The way I installed 6.4.3r9 was different this time. First time around I downloaded the demo version. This time I supplied my key and downloaded an upgrade. I then let the upgrade uninstall 6.4.8.

Silverfast 6.4.3r9 uses the input profile: LS4000LS40_P v4.0.2000.

A search for this profile finds it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nikon\Profiles, created Thursday, 9 March 2006, 8:12:12 PM, modified today, 15 April 2006, 2:48:17 PM. The file properties also show the Colour Profile Producer as Nikon Inc. & Nikon Corporation 2000. I assume this profile was added with one of the installs of Silverfast 6.4.9.

I would like to know why 6.4.3r9 includes an input profile and why is greyed out so cannot be altered.

I had same problem.

I experienced same problem as above.
With v6.4.3r9, prescan result was very light. (I use coolscan V ed)
I wondered there were some problems in my setting.
(Thanks to your announcements)
I want to back to previous version, but unfortunetely, I don't have previous version because I have formatted my PC a few days ago.
Would someone help me for proper scan work?
Please send mail with 6.4.3r8 to me.

YoungSeob Shin from Seoul

Version 6.4.3r9 is still giving me negative scans 2 stops lighter than they should be.

Despite the first few scan appearing to be OK (earlier report), these images turned out to under exposed on film, so ?two wrongs? were cancelling each other out.

I emailed Lasersoft support. So far they have only suggested that I edit the film profiles to correct the ?lightness?. I restated that the film profiles I typically use are fine with 6.4.3r8.

Acknowledged: 6.4.3r9 onwards issues with Nikon Coolscan IV

May 25, Christoph Sperling (LSI Senior Tester) acknowledged Lasersoft could reproduce the light scans and inability to disable profile issues I reported. "will fix it as soon as possible". (It is nearly 2 month since the issue was reported.)

Meanwhile I suggest keeping copies of 6.4.3r8 or earlier in case you experience the same problems I did.

I am not missing out on any great new features after 6.4.3r8, so for me I can wait. It could be a problem for new cutomers!

Version 6.4.4r3b fixes light scans issue

Version 6.4.4r3b fixes the light scans issue I have been experiencing since version 6.4.3r9 with my Nikon Coolscan IV ED.

I made 50 scans yesterday after upgrading without the behaviour experienced with version 6.4.3r9 occurring.

Thanks to Christoph Sperling and Lasersoft Imaging for providing a fix.

MikeB
