"Vertical Banding Lines" in Nikon 8000 scans

Postby johnchiasson » Mon Feb 06, 2006 8:46 pm

I'm wondering if anyone else using Nikon 8000 scanner is having problems with "band lines" in hi-res scans? This problem seems to come and go. Sometimes the lines appear mostly in (rgb) green channel, other times in the blue channel. The lines always run vertically. Also, the banding usually appears in only 2 areas of the image (not the entire frame). I'm on a Mac G5 using latest SF version as a PS CS2 plug-in. Any help resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

This is a well known defect in the 8000. Set it for "fine" mode (IIRC - single CCD row) to eliminate it. The scans will take longer, but you will not have the banding caused by a mechanical resonance in the scanner. It is not an issue with the scanner software, either Nikon or Silverfast.

I think this one is actually the most seroius source in the internet related to Nikons banding issue:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/revie ... 8000.shtml

scroll to the end to letters from readers and have a look on the one by Vuescan-designer Ed Hamrick from 30.08.2001

According to the LS 9000 ED a member of the Yahoo SIG Nikon LS8000/9000 (kirk gittings) wrote in december 2005 that Nikon told him there is no improvement built in related to the banding issue, because it?s a basic conflict using three CCDs.

P.S.:
The smaller Nikon LS 5000 shows a similar behaviour since he has got a threeline CCD as well, the Nikon LS 4000 still didn?t have. :o
