How Raw is a "Raw-Scan"?

Postby MiguelAleman » Tue Jan 03, 2006 2:39 pm

Hello Everyone

I am trying to understand how raw a "raw-scan" is from the following perspectives:

- What variables affect a raw scan?

==> Is it just focusing and CCD exposure time?

- How about white and black point settings?

==>Are these strictly post-processing steps?

Best Regards

Hello MiguelAleman,

In my experience with SilverFast all of the options are grayed out when I select 48-Bit HDR Colour. I can't make any of the normal tonality adjustments. AACO in SI Studio still works along with SRD or Digital ICE, but beyond that I get the RAW data from my scanner and have to make all other tonality adjustments in post processing.

Hello RAG

I just replied to your comments on my other thread (regarding Silverfast benefits over NikonScan) and you answer here reinforces my mental model that there is not such a thing as making tonal adjusments during an actual scan ==> and that tonal shaping can only be achieved by post-processing of the raw data obtained during the scan.

ps ==> To avoid duplications, I suggest we move any follow-up discussion on this topic to the other post I mentioned aabove.

Best Regards
