IV ED and ICE How does the ICE button work??

Postby MikeD56 » Sun Mar 20, 2005 6:27 pm

I'm having a problem figuring out how to use ICE with SilverFast Ai. I have both a Nikon IV ED and 4870 Pro with ICE and there is simply no information on how to make it work in Ai. Please post a sentence or two how to use it. I can click the button and change it from grey to color to IV but what then?? If I prescan no change. If I scan the resulting image doesn't seem to be ICE processed. What am I doing wrong???
Thanks
Mike

MikeD56,

You will not see any change in the pre-scan. Only in the final scan, and then only if ICE made any changes.

Cycling through the different states of the ICE button, I made the following observation:
ICE button grayed: no dust gets removed
ICE button enabled: dust gets removed
ICE button enabled and icon says 'IV': dust gets removed and the image looks slightly smoother

So I wonder what exactly is the difference between ICE and ICE4. Does it correspond to any settings of NikonScan ? I'm pretty sure that ROC/GEM/DEE are not enabled in SilverFast's ICE4 mode (which is good as the results seem to be rather unpredictable....)

So, can someone please explain the function of the third state of the ICE button, i.e. ICE4 ? Thanks!

SF for my CS4000, the three modes are OFF, Normal Cleanup, Fine Cleanup (IV).
The Fine cleanup can soften images more noticably than Normal. It is a heavier cleaning setting.

I was a little confused there for a moment, but now I understand what is going on. My scanner has DIGITAL ICE? and your scanners have DIGITAL ICE4 which incorporates technology similar to Digital Show in addition to ICE, ROC, and GEM. ROC handles color cast adjustments and GEM deals with noise. Apparently on the DIGITAL ICE4 enabled scanners Silverfast provides you the ability to select which levels or components of DIGITAL ICE4 are executed during a scan. With DIGITAL ICE? I only have the options of "ON" or "OFF".

Thanks!

as does mine. You should have the three modes i mentioned. SF , from what has been said here in the past, did not purchase the liscense for the other cleanup routines - ROC and GEM. THey developed their own. i would be surprised if that changed with the introduciton of ICE4 on the 5000.
