Coolscan 8000 Error Message - Cannot Focus

In the middle of scanning with the Coolscan 8000 I suddenly get an error message saying "An error occurred at the start of the scanning process. Cannot Focus".

I have tried turning the scanner on and off & rebooting the computer (XP Pro) but no better.

The scanner works with v**s**n but I much prefer Silverfast.
