LaserSoft Imaging

I have found SilverFast running on even not SE version of Windows 98, but with the following limitations :
- film drawer for the Coolscan not usable
- problems arising when the resolution is getting higher
I seems that the USB within Windows 98 is a problem.

Behaviour depending on the resolution :
- about 75 dpi : OK
- about 150 dpi : image interleaved in several parts !
- about 250 dpi : scanning running with no time out and "cancel" do not work, quitting the application either
Note : Dell computer Latitude CPt with Windows98 + USB hub Shark Multimedia

I do not want to upgrade from Windows 98 to 98SE.

What can I do ?

Have you tried this without the HUB ?

Hi Frank,

Windows98 and Coolscan V incompatibility has been reported. For instance, another third party software told me. Therefore I did not even try without the USB hub.

My logical volume C: is full at 95%, and I do not want the medicine to cause any other problem. My main need is low resolution scan for web photos. This need is fullfilled (well, I am still waiting for an extra hardware part from Nikon, but that is another topic, I can scan negatives in dia frames without this part).

I would like to install some new driver or DLL only, without a complete system update.

I seems that the PC USB buffering should be adapted to fit the scanner sending mode, considering my medium and high resolutions tries results. May be the hub has some on-board buffering, but not much. It could be even worst without it.

As expected by-passing the USB hub let the problem the same.

It would be easier for information search to have a true version numbering for Windows (*) !

A way to avoid this problem should be to add an USB/PCMCIA card... Hum... I have found some of these cards specified for 98SE not 98... Could be another problem ?

If Nikon says they do not support the version of Win that you are using, then you are lucky to get any output at all.

Perhaps a better path would be to borrow a friend's machine from time to time ? Or perhaps get another disk drive for the laptop and install a clean copy with a supported version of Windows and swap them when you need to ?

Silverfast do not support the version too, nevertheless software installation is possible and I got a minimum of results thanks to the demo version before purchasing it. The Nikon software detects the windows version and stops any installation !

The hard disk is drawned in some gell mounted I don't know how. Re-formatting would be enough : I don't know for what reason, Dell splitted the 6 Goctets disk to 3 x 2 Goctets. It would be an opportunity to update to SE version... and likely to get other unconsitencies.

It is really a shame that the USB management cannot be updated only. The matter is memory management, excluding swap management (swap not needed in the exemples given and swap not on my C: volume anyhow).

I have found management files on internet dated 2000 for the USB but as an update for 98SE or ME versions with no details. The lack of a clear version numbering is the first problem.
