My Nikon LS 4000 started giving wide vertical color bars recently.
Is this a scanner hardware problem? Any ideas?

How many pixels wide are they ? Are they along the scan axis or across it ? Are they consistently in one place for any slide ? Are they a particular color or color shift in the band ?

Frank,
How many pixels wide are they ? 4 wide I think, but a little hard to tell
Are they along the scan axis or across it ? Across it, i.e. perpendicular to the axis.
Are they consistently in one place for any slide ? I believe so?
Are they a particular color or color shift in the band ? They follow a pattern that may have something to do with the slide. A particular bar may have several color segments.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Update,
I attached the scanner to another computer. It works fine with Nikon Scan 4. Must be a software problem, probably driver,.
Thanks,
Michael

Try your communication cable/ ports. It may have been loose. The other thing that can get you is if the voltage to the scanner is insufficient or of very poor sinusoidal waveform. i run mine off of a UPS that the computer is plugged into. Make sure both are on the same power circuit, otherwise you can get a ground loop and upset the A/D converter.

Problem solved
I had set the /PAE swith in my boot.ini file in a misquided effort to access more memory.
When I turned the switch off, the scanner started working.
