I just upgraded to 5.5 from 5.2 and scans of negatives are producing scans that do not even come close to the pre-scan image. Looking at the scanned image levels in Photoshop it looks to me like the levels have been shifted toward the white point, i.e. the graph is piled up on the right site. This makes the scanned image look much lighter than the pre-scan. Also the colors on the pre-scan are very saturated and do not match the scanned image. I have tried to set the options and configuration per Ian's L. web site tutorials, but this problem occured before and after. I think I have something configured incorrectly but I have no idea what it might be. Any ideas would be great.
Thanks
Rob
P.S. I did uninstall 5.2 before installing 5.5.

I have the similar problems with 5.5.0r09 photoshop plugin (Not twain, I think. How do I know for sure?): the scanned image look much lighter than the pre-scan. In my case the saturation is very low and the image looks pale. Embed ICC profile is ON.
Images look nice from Nikon Scan 3.1. I have no color printer installed nor profiles for one.
I tried "Negative Automatic" (new in r.09) and colors looked much better, but I couldn't use Nega-fix any more

. In both cases (negative and Negative Automatic) the images in Photoshop looked like the prescan image *outside* the selection. Actually with Negative Automatic the image outside the selection looks better than the image inside. (How do I get this to apply for the selection too?)
It looks like the problem is related to the the color profile, it seems NOT embedded because the field "profile to embed" is set to <None> when using Negative or Negative Automatic" in Option dialog. Only when selecting "positive" the Internal profile is reflected in the "Profile to embed".
IOW, how do I set the "profile to embed" to anything else but <None> while using Nega-fix?

Bart,
I also have a strange problem, you talk about "negative Automatic" with me its called "Negative Nikon", its the hardware based negative to positive transformation in the scanner, used by Nikonscan and Silverfast before 5.5. In SF5.5R09 you can switch between Negafix and the hardware based transformation.
My LS4000, PC windows 2000, Adobe RGB, PS6.01
has a few strange problems with SF5.5R09; first using Negafix and the right film profiles, gives to dark scans, have to adjust brightness in Negafix menu between +1.5 and +2.0. If I use no negative profile at all, the images have the right brightness, only the colorbalance is not perfect. So with my scanner the profiles come out to dark (have to adjust white/highlight point drasticly) With "Negative Nikon" it is the other way around, initial scans are to bright! Need to adjust the shadowpoint drasticly!
Altough the end results are great it is not perfect yet.

OK, to date I have seen other post that basically state that NegaFix on the Nikon version does not work as advertised and in my case makes the software completely useless for scanning negatives. The prescan bears no resemblance to the resulting scan in Phtoshop. I have sent email with files of the scans to support along with a list of other issues with SF 5.5. It has been over a week since I sent them with no reply. It has been over two weeks since I posted the original message here, and there have been no responses from SF personnel.
The question I have is this really a viable product that is working or is this product just a scam?

I too have been having similar problems with SilverFast Ai 5.5.0r14. I have the Nikon LS-30 scanner and the scans I make using NegaFix are terrible. The only way to get something acceptable has been to go into expert mode.
