    SilverFast SF-App v1.1.3
    SilverFast AI (NikonM) v6.0.1d12
Quitting SilverFast between film loads

SilverFast doesn't seem to know when a roll of film has been loaded into the scanner. It therefore doesn't realise that the frame position data it has is probably wrong requiring a recalibration.

I have tried various methods of forcing SilverFast to update its data but I'm not sure which one is the best or correct method.

Q. Should we press the Overview button after loading a roll of film, or press the Prescan button to force SilverFast to refresh its frame data?

Q. Are we supposed to quit SilverFast after ejecting one roll of film, and then relaunch it after loading the next roll of film into the scanner?

press prescan.

Yes up to ver. 6.0.1r12 <-- this version can recognize change of film holder. However, SF only recognizes that there is a new holder, the preview frame will not be adapted, as this can only be done with human intelligence (by the user).

Yes up to ver. 6.0.1r12 <- this version can recognize change of film holder. However, SF only recognizes that there is a new holder, the preview frame will not be adapted, as this can only be done with human intelligence (by the user).

On the other hand, it is almost impossible for the film position to be identical every time it is inserted into the holder so the current prescan may be useless most of the time.

You mentioned clicking Prescan to recalculate the film position. Does this also reset the thumbnails in Overview? If not, does SF ever delete the previews and thumbnails or do they just keep piling up within the SF folder? I have seen the previews for SF HDR stay around for a lonnnggg time.

Yesterday, I found that the following procedure went pretty well:
  • Eject the film
  • Close the SF Plugin (leaving SF App running seems to be problem-free)
  • Delete all of the Previews and Thumbnails from within the SF folder
  • Load the next roll of film
  • Re-open the SF Plugin
  • 'Trash' the current selection frame to reset the frame data using the Frame-Trash tool
  • Select my preconfigured Frame Set
  • Select my preconfigured Settings set, and then
  • Click Prescan to force the recalibration of film positions
Whew! What a procedure, but it seems to work well.

Note that I use Frame Sets and Settings heavily. Are these saved within the Prefs files for each plugin? If so, it should be apparent that I don't like the idea of having to delete the prefs files to solve some of SF's problems. Could these settings be saved separately to the main plugin preferences?

The procedure doesn't work as well as I hoped

The procedure doesn't work as well as I had hoped. I just scanned a roll of 36 frames. Around 6 of the frames were not within the scan frame which means that the photos were off-centre by more than a few millimeters.

The Nikon Super Coolscan 4000ED features pretty high precision. In any case, all photos taken on 135mm film should begin and end at the edges of the film perforations. No photo would begin or end in the area between the perforations. This means that only film strip offsets in units of the perforation spacing (8 perforations per 1.5" of film = 3/16" per unit) should be required to perfectly align the photos with the scan area. What am I missing?

True! in theory the space between every 8 perforations should be equal, but this might vary with the accuracy of the cutter. I am refering - however - to film strips of 4 to 6 images (those that come back from developing service). Don't have an entire 36 images strip.
