A note of appreciation for the recent release of 5.5.1 R10 for the PIE 1800 scanner. There has been a significant improvement in many aspects of the software, notably in the framing of negatives, better handshaking between the scanner and computer (no more yellow and red bands across the image), and more consistent output from the Kodak color negative profiles.
One thing that concerns me is the new prescan sequence. This seems to have been accelerated into a series of short bursts, each accompanied by the sound of a metallic impact from within the scanner (the drive screw attacking the sensor assembly?). Is this going to cause premature wear on the mechanical drive system?

Do you see this preview behaviour for ANY preview? Positive and negative? Filmstrip and mounted slide?

I have tried to pin down correlates to the scanner noise in the PIE1800 with 5.5.1.r10. It is limited to the prescan sequence. When it happens it sounds like the drive system engages too forcefully at the onset of each movement of the scanner. It seems that the problem occurs during almost every prescan with positive mounted transparensies but is less frequent when scanning color negative strips. It does not appear to be related to contrast or brightness, the same negative can generate the noise on one scan and then not on the next. When it does occur it is preceeded by the same type of noise during the "preparatory" motor activity prior to the prescan. There is no obvious effect on the image generated by the prescan.
