Hi,
I just saw on an australian website http://www.scannerplace.com.au/tamarack.htm
that the primefilm 1800 together with silverfast supports multi-sampling. However the demo and full (unregistered) version do not seem to support multi sampling for this scanner.
Is multi sampling supported for this scanner and if so can I download a version with which i can try this?
Primefilm 1800 and multi sampling

Not much of a loss as the improvement in scan quality was marginal
I just purchased AI for the PF1800. When installing the software off the CD, I of course got a much older version than the demo I had been trialling.
I found the multiscanning good, it does not make noise free images - but it is better. On my scanner it does not cause problems due to the accuracy of positioning the scanner head during repeated scans. I think the multiscanning should be left-in, perhaps with a disclaimer that some scanners may not have sufficient accuracy in the hardware.
In the CyberView drivers that come with the scanner there is a "Quality" checkbox - and this appears to force scanning of each scanline twice. Is this correct?? If so, then will SilverFast also offer a form of multiscanning which is done in a single pass.
One thing I want to do is unerase the .tif files that are scanned during a multiscan, so that I can make a comparison between the individual images. I would like to calculate the percentage of pixels affected by noise - and the deviation in intensity of the RGB colour components.
The NeatImage program (www.neatimage.com) is fantastic at removing noise from scans - particularly from the hi-res images obtained from film scanners. You just have to be careful that it doesn't take too much "noise" out of areas that should have grain - like gravel. This is why it is important to use things like multi-sampling to get the source with as much noise already removed.
If multi-sampling is what makes the difference between Cyberview and Silverfast then it should definitely be included. This must be the difference because Cyberview takes 3 minutes for a scan while Silverfast only takes 1 minute. Perhaps if you scan only ISO 100 negatives the difference is marginal, however, if you scan ISO 400 negatives, there is a huge difference in graininess between Cyberview and Silverfast. Although the color is better, the Silverfast scans are unacceptable because of the grainy appearance. Lasersoft, please address this issue in the next version. If I can get the smoothe sharp images offered by Cyberview combined with the color of Silverfast, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

SilverFast Grain Removal for PF 1800
We are working on a grain removal filter for all film scanners. Expect this to be in the next major upgrade which will be V5.6.
The SF GANE? (Grain and Noise Elimination) will not deteriorate the image details and will be fully user controlled.

A grain filter would be very useful. I am scanning color negatives dating back 25 years and the best scans come from the older film. Ian Lyons has noted that this problem has become worse with the newer films, particularly Kodak Royal Gold, and can be fixed to some extent with the screening filter in Silverfast. I have found that Photopaint's Gaussian filter with pixel width set to 0.5 also does a good job when very fine detail is not an issue (and with this scanner..).

I found that switching from 'Normal'to 'Quality'gives a better saturated picture. It did not see however an improvement in noise levels.

Also from me: Can you give us an estimate when V5.6 will be released? For me, the buy time (Kaufmoment)depends on it.

Dear Rene,
the LSI_president post about 5.6 was from march!
There is no 5.6 version only a 5.5.2 version available. Did you check out what features the current 5.5.2 version holds for you?
Hi,
I am looking for the SF GANE? (Grain and Noise Elimination) feature the LSI_President wrote about. Is that already in 5.5.2?
Regards.
