Set up and tips

Looking for help. 
I recently purchased the PIE 1800 silver. It came with Silverfast Se 5.5. I have installed into Photoshop elements.
I have several hundred slides to scan and am looking to set up the program to maximize the qualilty and speed. All images will mainly be used for use in powerpoint for projection purposes (I may want to make photos of some). Almost all slides are of people.
Any advice would be great. Being a rookie at this, I would appreciate any tips on setting up and using the software for great scans each time. It is a little overwhelming on what I see so far.
