How to work with the Midtone tool

I regularly select the mid-tone tool and neutralize various scans by clicking on a neutral spot on the frame. Works very well for me.
However, let's assume I'm scanning a number of different images, all with roughly the same settings. The next frame I put in, of course, has the mid-tone neutralization point in the wrong place. So I select the tool, shift-click to get rid of it, and the tool switches to the hand tool.
Is there any way I can keep it as the mid-tone selection tool? Because chances are I'll be making a new mid-tone selection after deleting an old one. This also holds true with a new selection which does not give the desired effect. I would love to be able to shift click and then re-click without going up to the tool to re-select the mid-tone selection tool. In a strip of 3 frames of 120 film it wastes a lot of time, going back and forth to select the tool.
