SF SE, B&W negs, 48bit HDR

Hi all
When I scan a B&W negative in SF SE as 48bit HDR color or 16 bit HDR grayscale the final image in Photoshop opens as a negative image. Inverting the image brings up a very pale image.
Scanning the same image as 48 to 24 bit leaves with a positive image in PS.
I understand the HDR image is "RAW" but why is the inveted image weak?
I am using a 5400 Minolta scanner.
I think I will get a better scan in 48bit HDR than 48bit to 24bit and the resulting rgb 16bit file. Am I wrong?
Thanks
Neil
