Automatic exposure features

Postby georgetatge » Wed Jan 04, 2012 11:47 am

I am using an Epson 750 Pro scanner for 4x5 and 5x7 in transparencies for the purpose of generating high resolution prints for gallery sales.
I would like to deactivate any automatic exposure features (maintaining, however, the sharpening and ICE features) so that the Silver Fast scan will give me
what I see in the transparency itself. I would prefer to make any alterations in exposure or color MYSELF in Photoshop.
I have tried activating and deactivating boxes in the Options boxes and still cannot avoid changes happening when I place the red marquee around the image.
Also, is there a way to generate a RAW file rather than a tiff file?
Many thanks,
George Tatge

Hi there,

The scanner will never "perceive" the transparency as you see it. Your perception works different than the scanner. In other words you will obtain something similar to what you might like but not exactly the same as you perceive your pictures with bare eyes.

But, yes it is possible to deactivate automatic correction.

In SilverFast 6 Ai or Ai Studio go to the general tab and click the "options" button (in windows you find the "options" button near the "scan" button)

In Options select the "Auto" tab and deactivate all automatic corrections ( especially those marked in the graphic below).

Yeah, 48 bit HDR or 64 bit HDRi allow you to create unmodified scanner raw files, these must be saved in TIFF format.

Muchas gracias Alejandro for your timely answers.
If I have to save the RAW files in Tiff, as you suggest, do you know how I could open them up in
Photoshop's RAW window? The reason I ask is that there are some very useful and functional adjustments
one can make in this RAW window that can't be done later once the image has been converted.
Noise removal, for example.
Thank you again.
George

Have you tried using Adobe Bridge?
