6.6 hangs - best setting for tranny FPO'S?

I just managed to hang 6.6 in a way not even Mac's Force Quit could resolve—and that is unusual. Only a power button shut down knocked it out. 6.6 is not sensitive to operator error (ie like forgetting to turn the scanner on—yes, dumb, I know). Closing an image, I notice, does not seem to close down Silverfast, requiring force quit of Silverfast and photoshop, for example.
Can any one help me save time? I am trying to scan old 135mm trannies on my Coolscan IVED for placing via photoshop into InDesign for FPO (for position only). The scans look fine in photoshop, but when placed on the page in InDesign they are very small, and enlarged the are too jaggy to be of much use. I have tried scanning at 725&300 at 100%, both of which rendered the same sized image when placed in InDesign. I got the superhang when I tried scanning at 72DPI at 500%. I would like to get something that scans quickly but renders a usable FPO when placed on the page.
What setting should I use? Under the old Nikon software the scan rendered the same small original tranny, but at a much higher resolution (2900x3300, or something like that). When resolved to 300dpi in photoshop the file was easily manipulated when placed as an FPO in InDesign. Is this the kind of resolution I have to use in Silverfast?
FYI in my experience coolscanIV ED scan quality is not good enough for higher quality print work, but it is fine for FPO. This, of course, is subject to my extremely limited knowledge of scanning—a job I would rather let the printer take care of.
