Problems with SCSI Cards Scanner not found

Hi
Please help I have lost the will to live.
I have a G4 Mac Running osx 10.3.9 Processor 400 mhz Power Pc Memory 1.12gb SDRAM
We are trying to add a scanner - Lineotype Circon Model ELS-500. We have added a SCSi card into slot B PCI 9004 7850 and downloaded a new driver PCI UL3D/3S. We are running Photoshop CS. We are using the Silverfast AI software(epson-SE) Studio Version 6. The software seems to install ok. But when we click within photoshop import and go to the silverfast plugin the error message we get is scanner not found? We have tried to restart with the scanner turned on. We have tried the ID on the scanner through from 2 - 6 and restarted everytime we changed it. We have tried to move the SCSI card into different slots to no avail. Does anyone know what we are doing wrong? Are we running the wrong Silverfast software? Do I need another driver? The scanner appears to make noises when the computer starts up. But nothing is happening within photoshop. Help help?
Many thanks
Sarah

Dear Sarah,
sadly the most Adaptec Cards like yours do not work properly in Mac OS X 10.3 and higher. The only cards supported from 10.3 on are from Atto and Acard.
Sadly there is nothing we can do about this .

I have a similar issue with a very similar scanner, the Heidelberg 2650.
I downloaded the demo and installed it on a Campaq PC with Windows 2000 SP4. When it gets to the detecting devices stage, the program takes about 2 minutes to respond, the scanner goes through an apparent calibration cycle, and the scan screen appears. Hitting the prescan button causes the Preparing Scan dialog to appear, again for about 2 minutes, followed by a calibration cycle, and then a scanner not ready error message.
This appears to be some sort of communication problem. How do I go about resolving it?

Dear lmenzin,
your problem is not similar as you have a Windows machine and the other customer in this thread has a Mac with a SCSI adapter that is not supported by Apple since OSX 10.3
You would have some sort of SCSI communication problem which could be caused by messed up or wrong ASPI drivers, improper terminiation or faulty SCSI cable. Basically the best thing to Do when troubleshooting SCSI issues is to limit the number of potential problem by shortening the SCSI chain by just connecting the scanner directly to the SCSI card of the PC and ensure the Scanner is probably terminated and that realy just the scanner is connected to the SCSI card.
Now you can try to switch through the SCSI IDs on the scanner to see if something works better(note that SCSI IDs cannot changed when the PC is running)
as a last resort I would recommend checking if the ASPI driver is up to date and in doubt update it.

Thanks, Thomas.
I have only one device connected to the SCSI card, which is the scanner. I do have one of those Granite Digital SCSI diagnostic adapters and the TERM light is lit, meaning that there is probably proper termination.
When I first connected the scanner, the Windows plug-and-play function displayed "Found New Hardware" and looked for a Windows driver for the 2650. Since no such driver exists (as far as I know), I just hit the cancel button. The 2650 appears in device manager under Other Devices. With a correct scanner driver it should appear under Scanners and Imaging Devices. Is this correct? Does LaserSoft have a Windows driver for this scanner? Or does Silverfast work directly with the SCSI hardware and does not need a Windows driver?
Is there anything else I should check on? My SCSI card is an Advansys.

thank you for your replies.
I do have a mac G3 and also a G5. Should i then try and run the scanner from one of those machines? my only thought is that the silverfast software when installing on the G4 said that i had to have OSx 10.3 that's why I bought Panther and updated the OS. Will I get the same problem if I try to run it from the G3. The SCSI card does not fit in the G5, therefore should I buy another SCSI card? The driver that I downloaded required me to have OSx 10.3 also.
What is the best way to go forward please? Can I do anything? are there any solutions?
Please help if you can.
thank you
Sarah

Dear lmenzin,
please try the latest driver for your SCSI Card from the following site:
http://list.driverguide.com/list/company46/This Scanner does not need any driver when used with SilverFast but the SCSI needs to be working properly
Dear Sarah,
you would definitely need a new SCSI Card from either ATTO or Arcard that is support from OSX 10.3 but as these cards are not cheap I would consider trying a Ratoc FireWire to SCSI Adapter which also has been successfully tested with this scanner.
I hope this helps :-)
