6.5 auto shadow hylite ruins the scan

I was pretty amazed to find that clicking on the auto hylite shadow midtone completely
ruins a prescan. Turns it into a grey contrastless mess.
And still since all the way back I still cannot remove the carnage with a simple Ctrl-z.
I have to open histogram and hit reset.
I suspect I have something in `options' set way off base causing the auto
tool not to work as expected. Is there some way to get a text printout of
all my settings other than laboriously copy/paste?
Maybe someone would recognize a bad setting that is the culprit.
Is there some other way, avoiding the auto tool, to get a reasonable result with one
or two clicks for those times when it isn't necessary to get the best possible hand
crafted time consuming result?
