I am confused and frustrated

Hi
I've been using Silverfast with a Minolta 5400 for about a year. Yesterday the mechanism for moving the slide / negative mount jammed. I opened the scanner, freed it, and carried on.
The first scan from negative print came out with very dark hues.
The second scan got as far as the prescan and SF just hung. I restarted everything and it scanned, but on opening Elements 3, hung. Sometimes I would get a message saying the scanner could not be found.
This sort of thing happened a few times with me having to restart SF and / or the PC each time and finally it has got to:
I can start SF. I can preview a strip of negatives. I cannot make a preview of scan of anything- it just hangs with no error message.
If I uninstall and reinstall everything including the Minolta drivers, when I reinstall, do I have to use the minolta drivers or can I run the whole show just using silverfast and if, so do I need the TWAIN thing? (As you can tell, my technical knowledge is not too advanced).
I am running XP SP2.
Thanks
Matt
