Running Latest version of AI (6.4.3rd)

I suspect this is related to the white point thread I started (and misspelled) earlier today. And more than likely .. somekind of operator error.

When I invoke the `auto image adjust' tool I see a massive change that nearly always renders the image useless. That is, the change is way too over done. In this case it turns what is starting to look sort of ok into a useless grey mess.

I didn't take time to write nice formatting of everthing so the after is displayed first, but you can tell which they are by the file names (AutoAdjust*.png)

The other two there (a lone woman standing) are Before/After using white point and I've left them since I hope to get answers on that thread too.

Realizing I'm pretty much of a clutz, I suppose this is happening due to some misconfigured thing I've done or my lack of understanding as to how this is supposed to be used. So finding that something really basic is clutzed up is not unlikely.

As it stands right now, the tools that should help me swiftly get thru a pile of mostly poorly lighted pics for a project due this coming wkend are rendering pics useless rather than speeding things up. I know that is not normal but can't really even guess what may be wrong.

I went thru some of this before... its coming back to me now as I look at the tutorial... and again this time I'm finding that on my options/CMS several of the choices advocated in CMS explained tutorial:

In example 2 we're shown to set `Profile to Embed'... On my diaglog that box is greyed out and not active.

Exampl3 We are told to set `Internal -> Monitor' to automatic.
The automatic field on my dialog is greyed out and inactive.

It goes on.... I know these tutorials are billed as hugely usefull but I fail to see such great utility in something that does not describe my software.

Then the manual... I've had it right from the start. The Color management area talks alot about where things are set but almost nothing about what to set them on.

There is quite a section about IT8 Calibration which near as I can tell is not included in the $400 or so I paid.

Then I see where it says the calibration button will stop being grey and will become colored.... I have no calibration button at all.

There is mention repeatedly of Silverfast AI being tightly integrated iwth photshop 5? Yeah 5. That has to be a couple years old at least.

Is there something in those links that actually talks about the current versions of Silverfast?

It appears doing the calibration with this not included tool would be the way to go for someone who sees ancient hebrew in the manual.

But I've tried to check into that before and just became more confused.

Is there a simple staight forward download page where it is clearly indicated what to download and what it costs?

The manual describes how to do the actual calibration pretty well it looks like. And it appear that a not so well informed consumer like me could probably get it done without to much trouble.
