AI 6.4.2rd... is magnification buggy on this release?

Running Silverfast AI 6.4.2rd on Intel x86 3.2GB processor

I'm too new a user to know if this is really my doing somehow but I'm finding lots of problems when using magnification this morning.

I have Hi Res scanning set to 1x so that should head off the known bug.

I have an epson 4870 flatbed with 9 wallet size old prints I'm trying to scan.

I'm using batch mode and creating frames for each. I need to magnify them one at a time to get the detail needed to make repairs such as cloning etc.

Once I've done that and have finished one frame, I need to resize down to normal size to get started on another. When I do it seems to be a high percentage gamble that it will stop all work. When I click on the mag icon more often than not the screen goes white and no further work is possible.

Deleting prefs files time after time to get started again each time this happens.

For a while I was confused about which prefs to delete but now I know where it is under Documents and Settings. Each time I do it, the restart comes up with a nice clean slate and I try again. At the first or second resize down (each time) I'll have a major freeze up again.

In 1.5 hrs now I haven't managed to get all 9 done.

Hopefully there is something really wrong with the way I'm going at this, I hope this software is not just this buggy.
