Automatic density button

Can someone explain the use of the automatic density button in silverfast for nikon coolscan.
What is its purpose and what benefits does it bring, because I can't find any explaination of it in the PDFs

The Auto-Exposure of Auto-Density button in SilverFast for Nikon film scanners is checking the actual density and is controlling the Analog-Digital converters to adjust the exposure time (integration time of the CCD) to the max density of the image. That is why the scanner takes longer because it has to do an extra measurement over the whole image area.
