Question about SDR function

I am currently using SF SE 6 bundled with Epson 3200. I have also tried the demo version of SF AI 6. I am looking for a feature like, scan all the photo first and clean the dust at later stage. As you are aware, the light source inside the scanner is hot during the film scanning process. If you hold the film there long enough to correct the image, the film will probably blend and die. If I just use the auto SRD setting, a lot of dust still there and I'm looking for a second chance to fine tune it. However, I can't find any button to reopen the scanned image. If this SDR function can only be activated right before the final scan, I can tell you that it is almost useless to normal user. How can a normal user can only get a single chance to correct each and every image to make it perfect before the scan?

Perhaps I have overlooked something, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Dear solesurvivor.

When SRD is on, the image data is scanned into a temporary file. No SRD correction is made during this scan. After the scan, the temporary file is read into memory and corrected by the SRD algorithm.

Another way to use SRD is to scan all images (with Ai or SE) into a folder on your HD without SRD. Then post process the images with HDR or DC with SRD on. This would work in single file or batch mode. Also the job manager would be worth to look at. HDR and DC are separate products that have to be purchased separately.

Eric.

Dear Eric:

Thanks for your reply.

I'm really impressed by the functionality of the SF AI 6 as well as the SRD function. From your answer, it seems there is no way to scan the image first and use the SRD function at a second stage by just using SF AI 6? Will Job Manager in SF AI 6 help to reopen the scan? Even though I'm just a hobbist and already paid the SE 6 version bundled in Epson 3200 scanner, I am willing to spend an extra $119 to buy the AI 6. However, HDR seems a bit expensive for me since I'm not making any money from this.

Am I interpret your answer correctly?

Dear solesurvivor.

The plugin for your Epson scanner will never be able to reopen scanned files not even with the JobManager.

To open files that are on disk, you will need one of the following plugins:
- DC: can open 8-bit files of type tiff, jpeg or psd.
- DC-SE: same as DC, but limited functionality (like Epson-SE).
- HDR: same as DC, but also for 16-bit files.
- DCPro (coming soon): for raw files from digital cameras.

Possibly DC (or DC-SE) would satisfy your needs (and to a lower price than HDR) as long as you to not need to open 16-bit files.

However, as I mentioned in my answer, SRD is applied after the scan and is not disturbing the performance of the scan in any way.

Eric.

Thanks, Eric.

OK, I surrender. I am going to buy the SF HDR or SF DCPRO now. I will use the v**s**n to scan the 48-bit raw file first and use SF HDR or DCPRO for editing.

However, I'm living in Hong Kong. In what way I can buy it, will the company deliver the software to me on the web after I pay it via credit card online?

Besides, other posts in March said the DCPRo would be available in 3-4 weeks later. It seems the product has been delayed. When will it be launched?

All our products can be purchased online. After paying with your credit card, you will be able to download the software. In case of any questions regarding the online puchase, please contact our sales department at sales@silverfast.de

You always should try the free demo version first.

We try to release DCPro as soon as possible. I hope it will not take more than a few weeks, but there was a lot to implement for the different digital camera models. Also please keep in mind, that DCPro is useful if you have raw images from digital cameras like Nikon, Minolta, Canon, Kodak. If you are planing to process 16-bit images that are scanned by SilverFast Ai or v**s**n, it would be enough to purchase HDR.

Thanks, Eric:

Provided the pricing of HRD and DCPro has no very significant difference, I probably will wait until you launch SF DC Pro since I'm going to buy Canon 10D soon. At least, SF DC Pro can process the image from my Canon G3.

In the meantime, I will use v**s**n to scan the raw image and wait for the release of the software...
