LaserSoft Imaging

While reading chapter 5.1 of the SF 6 manual, and specifically Tool #1, the Histogram, I am still not sure how the operability of this tool is supposed to work. I am focusing on B&W negatives and when viewing the histogram I am able to move the Shadow, Highlight and the Normal/Logarithmic arrows back and forth. The values in the boxes change according to each "S," "H," and "N/L" change with the movement.

My question is where should the settings of each arrow be placed after making a prescan of an negative image? Is it a value judgement of the one that is viewing the histogram? Or is there a specific place on the histogram the arrows should be placed according to the variance of the graph? Does this movement affect the outcome of the output file?

I am not real sure how this operation of the histogram is supposed to opperate. Please give some insight to the operability other than what the manuel has to offer.

In the Histogram you can set the lightest and darkest point. All "lighter" / "darker" points bekcome black, and the gradiation curve is set between the lightest and darkest point. You could easely see the effect, if you move them both hard in the histogram.
