1. It would be helpful if somewhere on the Updates section of the site there appeared a list of bug fixes and innovations contained in each update.
2. For example, I see that Job Manager has now been added to the icon bar, but how useful is this function and where is its use explained?
3. Since installing this update for my Coolscan III my previews and scans now appear reversed and I have to flip each scan manually before editing/printing. What has caused this?

You are right and this will be added shortly, so that all changes, enhancements and fixes are explained.

Look for the JobManager PDF under downloads
3. Orientation of Scan
Check for the orientation of the final scan in the floating densitometer and correct accordingly within the densitometer panel. With that the orientation of the preview and final scan can be different. This way each scan frame can be independendly rotated or flipped.

In addition to the cropping problem noted by a previous poster the focus selection no longer works correctly, but in a "mirrored" position.
In other words, having correctly oriented your preview and final scan positions if you then try to crop the left hand side of the image you will lose the right hand side in the final scan and if you try to focus off centre the focus preview shows the opposite position to that which you specify.
This is all very frustrating and a step backwards in functionality.
When is this problem going to be fixed?

It is hard to understand how come that such a fine and successful
software as SilverFast Ai is accompanied by a Manual, whose English
language version can only be compared with the worst far-eastern
camera manuals of yore. There's no way this slipshod literal
"translation" from German could be excused by the need to keep down
the production costs.

Take for example the contents of SF_JobManager_GB.pdf, referred to
above by President_LSI. It would cost less then a Pfennig to run it
through an English spell checker just to catch the multitude of
misspelled words (e.g., Jobque, Klick, Joib, Listbox, dialog, i.g.,
wll, zou, immediatelz, thghe, iwill, emty, Jou---to name a few) and
German intrusions (Inhalt, f.t.b., and d.h.). I'm sure that LSI has
native English or American beta testers, who would be glad to edit
the English translation for free.

Finally a question. Both SF Manual (p. 29) and JobManager Manual
(p.5) mention "Automatic when ADF" in Defaults > General Menu; the
former explains it as 'Individual image auto-adjust for each scan,'
the later hints that it has something to do with Nikon LS2000
scanner. So, what's 'ADF'? Could it be that this is a newfangled acronym for
Bulk Slide Feeder?

Do you want powerful software or powerful manuals???? Can?t get both for nottin?, eeeeeeh!!!! Have seen enough nice manuals with software not doing the job, right!!

Of course with the fast pace of development, somtimes documentation gets little bit behind. Maybe we can invite you to get some fresh healthy air into your lungs here at Kiel and do some proof reading for the new manual??? Anyhow do not worry, we'll be catching up!


ADF is referring to the bulk feeder for slides, the SF200.

What about for a change some good comments about how powerful SilverFast is, so others get some inspiration from that?? (The inventor does not like to do it himself!!!)

Sometimes blowing your own trumpet is the only way you get to hear the tune the way it was meant to be heard. However, just so as you don't feel too lonely - the new version is VERY good and I'm sure Tomaz will love it to bits when it gets released for the Nikon units. You could do him one really big favour (he'll excuse you the manual) - make the IT8 calibration work better with his favourite film - Kodachrome.

What jrenton discribes about the Ai 5.2.1r08 is just also what I experience since I installed it and it's indeed quiet frustrating...So it needs some trimming
Tomaz Klinc is right about his comments on the SF manual although the software is a nice piece of tool to get very beautifull scans out of my LS4000.
This forum is a major improvement to get aware of the problems going around at the other users and to exchange the many experience they have with SF.

SFUS-520r01(NikonM).exe, the initial release of SF v5.2 (to LSI's credit that error was corrected within hours).

opinion you are wrong, on all three counts:

---No, I expect a good software to be described in an accurate and comprehensive, but not neccessarily witty manual;

---No, I don't expect a free lunch and I duly payed for SF v4.1, then for SF v5.1, and lastly for IT8 calibration;

---Yes, you can get first class software with most admirable manuals. One that you may not know of, and which comes completely gratis, is TeX, the de facto world standard for scientific, especially mathematical typesetting, and its witty manual, The TeXbook, by the program's author, Prof. Donald D. Knuth of Stanford University. The
second, that you may know, is Epsilon, The Programmer's Editor, by
Lugaru Software.

Has Lasersoft yet made any progress in identifying and correcting the various bugs reported in this thread, specifically in relation to the Nikon Coolscan III?

I second irenton's question. Is 5.2.1r08 (NikonM) officially considered O.K., and obsolete? If so, why not say it? However, it's a fact that IT8 calibration fails on my Win 2K machine, reporting incorrecty placed selection marquee and showing it displaced from the properly chosen possition.
