Hi, I am looking for a link or a thread that describes the process of obtaining a RAW data file with Silverfast. I had tried to find it bt am unable to do so. I will be very grateful if someone where to point out where it is.
Thanks!!!

Dear " cowgum "
If you like to get a raw data file with SilverFast you needs a scanner which is able to write 48 bit data. Those scanners SilverFast will support to get 48 bit data.

Dear cowgum
To get a 48 bit scan is very easy. Choose under " Image Mode " >> 48 Bit
HDR and you will get a original 48 BIT
HDR scan. If you choose >> 48 Bit colour, you will also get a 48 Bit scan, but choose this in the case, that you have a negatife filmstrip and you like to recieve a 48 bit positive scan. You can also choose 48 Bit
HDR, but than you will get a 48 bit negative scan.
hopefully I could help you

Hi Christopher
I need to scan 5,000 negatives for archive/digital conversion on a Nikon LS4000 ED. I have read Ian's tutorials and the SF manual . I have three questions:
1) If scanning in AI with either Job Manager or batch mode, am I better off selecting 48 bit HDR output and using negifix in HDR post processing; or selecting 48 bit positive with no other prescan processing, so I can use IT-8 calibration in HDR post scan? Which workflow will yield a better quality product?
2) With AI, in batch mode or JM, is there a way to NOT do a prescan or even an overview. With 5k scans, this takes time.
3) Why wouldn't I be better off scanning in Nikon's own 48bit RAW format (NEF) and then using HDR or DCPro post scan?
Thanks

Dear Calep -
The best way to use the batch scan is:
- use 48 Bit
HDR colour - it?s the best
- insert the filmstrip - chose batch scan - 5000 dpi - and hit the start button. By this procedure the scanner will not make a prescan but start with the endscan. Together with the filmroll holder SA 30 you can process quick many immages. Without this filmroll holder you can only scan a filmstrip with max. 6 immages and you have to rename this immages, or the next scan of 6 immages will overwrite the former 6 immages. You can also use the
Nikon software to write 48bit, but you have to take care, that you really get 48 bit. With SilverFast it is easy - you only have to select 48 Bit
HDR colour and that?s all.
with regards

One quick follow-up:
When scanning negatives in 48bit HDR mode, does Negifix get used during the scan, or only in the post scan processing in HDR?
Thanks

48bit HDR mode gives you a raw scan without NegaFix. You'll get a negative image complete with mask - you then use HDR to make the corrections using its built-in NegaFix function.

...even though the negafix dialogue box shows up? Should I close negafix, or does it nto matter because maybe it is disabled even though it shows up?

If "Scan Type" is set to "48 bit HDR Color" you can ignore the presence of the NegaFix dialog - it will not effect the image, which as I described above will scan as a negative, complete with coloured mask.
