If I have a scanner with ICE, do I have to use the software supplied with the scanner to utilize ICE, or can I do it with SilverFast?

That depends on your scanner. SilverFast supports digital ICE for
Nikon and Acer (BenQ) film scanners.
Please try the free
demo of SilverFast.

How does one use digital ICE for a 4000 ED when using SilverFast?
Thanks
Caleb

Dear Caleb.
There is an icon on the left side of the preview with a red cross inside. Hit this icon to enable dICE.

Thanks!
And does this enable hardware based dICE from the Nikon Scanner itself(which is reported to be very good), or is this a sortware type of dICE which SF is running?

Dear Caleb.
The icon has three states
1. Off.
2. Digital ICE, done by hardware.
3. SRD, which is dust and scratch removal by software. In this state, there is another icon visible below the first on. Hit this icon to enter a dialog for setting the parameters for SRD.

Thanks again
Do you agree with most comments I have heard about the Nikon 4000 ED hardware ICD that is excellent, and therefore when using SF, one should select the hardware ICE selection as a preferred user default setting?

Dear Caleb.
This is absolutely correct for color film material. Since digial ICE uses the infrared channel to detect distortions, this will normally give better results than SRD (Smart Removal of Defects).
However, when using black and white films, dICE is not working. Here you can select SRD to eliminate dust and scratches.

Amount of digital ICE controlable?

Can the amount of hardware digital ICE applied be controlled from the software? As far as I know NikonScan supports 2 different settings.

Dear Olaf.
Yes, SilverFast also offers both dICE settings for
Nikon scanners.
Please note, that the icons for digital ICE and SRD (smart removal of defects, done by software) have been separated. The icon for dICE now has the states:
1. off
2. dICE on
3. dICE2 on (
Nikon only).
Eric.
digital ICE the same as Nikon's?

Eric,
is Silverfast using the ICE technology for dust and scratch removal developed by Applied Science Ficton (ASF), or have you developed your own algorithm?
One of the reasons I got a Nikon scanner was for the superb dust and scratch removal that they offer with ASF ICE technology. I don't want to loose this using Silverfast

Dear flatpicker.
Yes, SilverFast uses digital ICE developed by ASF.
In addition, SilverFast offers SRD, which is our own algorithm to remove dust and scratch and which is done by software only (the IR channel is not used).
