:-? I am running Mac OS X 10.2.1 with Photoshop7 attempting to use SF6 to import image from my Umax Asrta 4000U, I know the 4000u is not yet a supported scanner for SF6 & OS X 10.2, although it works fine in OS 9.2 I'm just impatient with having to restart in OS 9 whenever I want to use my scanner I was wondering when this UpDate might be available, for this restart business is getting too frustrating.

4000U hardware not OS-X compliant

We regret to say that the Umax 4000U scanner hardware is not recognized by the Apple System Profiler. This seem to be due to the interface construction fo the scanner. For this reason we cannot support this scanner (that means: nobody can under OS-X).

We recently got in the new 2.0GHz DP G5s. The Apple System Profiler sees the UMAX Astra 4000U scanner as follows:
    USB Device
    Speed: up to 12Mb/sec
    Product ID: 4144 ($1030)
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Vendor ID: 5638

I did try and look up the IDs at www.linux-usb.org.usb.ids but neither the vendor or product IDs are listed. They also not listed in pcidevs.txt

Another curious item is that I connected it to a WinXP system and WinXP had no problem recognizing the device and loading it. Under WinXP it shows Vendor ID as 1606 and Product ID as 1030 which is listed at www.linux-usb.org.usb.ids?!?

With this info, can you all now develop a driver for OS 10.3.4? We have 6 of the darn things and I really don't want to have to replace them!

Thanks for your assistance!

Take care!

Jim

Just an update on the 4000U. We did hook it up to a newer G5 we received recently, and while it was recognized by the OS (which is new), it still seems to have problems communicating over the USB bus. We'll continue trying, but it just seems that Umax didn't use the USB protocol properly, and OS X is very strict about following the rules :D
