Best Computer Hardware Configuration?

Postby Mark_D » Sat Sep 03, 2016 4:50 pm

I am beginning the process of archiving my families photos and negatives going back to 1914 (over 1000 negatives) and was wondering if anyone has advice regarding the BEST hardware configuration for a Windows system.

The minimum requirements are (this is what my computer has now):
4-bit systems: Windows Vista, Windows 7, 8, 10 or Mac OS X from 10.7 - I am running Windows 10
2 GHz Processor or faster (Multi-core recommended) - I have a Duo Core @2.2 Ghz
4 GB RAM main memory (8 GB RAM recommended) - I have 4GB
2 GB free space on hard disk drive for the software file
Up to 20 GB free space on the main system hard disk drive for the cache - Question, would a Solid State drive help here?

What I would like to know is what SilverFast would benefit from the most (i.e. faster CPU, more RAM, better video speed and RAM, 4K Video, etc).

I plan on building a computer to try and take advantage of all factors in order to get the best performance from my scanner (Epson Perfection V850 Pro) and SilverFast.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions,

Mark

Dear Mark,

The Speed of the CPU and it's number of cores are a factor when processing images..
The required memory depends on the size of the images being processed. For normal 35mm film scanning 8GB should be sufficient. For medium or large format scanning more memory can be helpful.
A SSD can greatly speed up the general system behavior.
The graphics card does not have much influence. A 4k monitor is not required.

Kind regards,
Arne

Arne,

Thank you for the information. This does provide me with some guidance.

For your information, I am thinking of a system with:

Intel i7 with 6 or 8 cores
16 GB of RAM
Solid State Boot Drive
1 or 2 TB archive drive (due to the number of negatives that I need to archive)
2 to 4 GB of video RAM and a 4K monitor (for other purposes).

Compared to my current system this will be a significant improvement.

For software, we are currently using SilverFast SE Plus 8.8.0r5 and are evaluating Archive Suite among others for our final configuration.

Thanks again,

Mark

Dear Mark,

Oh yes that should be quite sufficient. ;-)

Kind regards,
Arne
