upgrade frustration - now resolved

LS,

following your advice, I contacted your sales department to pay for upgrades to include IT8 calibration, they were very helpful and a promising box arrived a week later in the mail. They forgot to say that tax was not included in the price they quoted.

The box contained not one, but three CDrom's!

One for Silverfast ai, one for Silverfast HDR, and one Feature CD. Each with a separate serialisation number of 20 digits printed on the envelope.

I proceeded to uninstall my previous version of Silverfast 6, and installed the new version. To my suprise it did not require a serial number to run. But it appeared to run fine. When I checked the serial number it was running under, it was a completely new one (not my old, not one of the three newly provided ones). I replaced it with the one printed on the envelope, and registered SF ai6. So far we managed to stumble through, and SFai6 appears to work.

The manual is completely silent on what to do next. Do we first install HDR and then IT8, or does the order not matter?

I should not have wondered, it does not work either way.

Can it be that after weeks of waiting you sent me two empty disks???

In Windows Explorer, I cannot see any evidence of the discs containing anything. It claims that the discs have 702 MB of free space each, and they are rated as 700 Mb discs according to the label. When trying to use the upgrade routine (press the "i" icon / credits / upgrade) it is a mystery at which point one is expected to insert the CDrom, and it is unclear in which CD drive. The PC finds an empty disc and enquires what it should do with the empty disc (open explorer, or do nothing) - the SF manual does not mention this - could it be that this upsets the upgrade routine?

Miraculously, the IT8 calibration appeared once, after a large number of unsuccessful tries. And I was able to complete calibration. I have never seen the calibration icon again. It disappeared.

Could you please, please not reply by saying that this is not the right place for my question. I spent 20 minutes trying to find the telephone number of your helpdesk in the manual, but could not locate it. The manual says cheerfully at this place in the installation procedure: "Wenn sich das Fenster mit dem OK knopf immer noch nicht schliessen laszt, wenden Sie sich bitte an uns" - NO TELEPHONE NUMBER!!!!

I tried your number in KIEL, nobody at home after business hours.

Your website mentions a number in the USA that I could try for $1.91 per minute. At this point I am reluctant to spend more money to get something working that should have been in working order from day 1.

Pentium4, 2GHz, 512Mb RAM, Windows XP (with service pack 1 installed), Nikon LS4000ED, Fotostation5, NikonScan 312.

This empty disk must be a mistake on our side indeed. Please let us know which CD is "empty" and we will replace it - of course.

Dear Thade,
here is an instruction of how to activate IT8:
Condition: SilverFast is installed and serialized on your computer (still without IT8).

Activation procedure:
- In the SilverFast user-interface you click on the "i" button (upper left of preview window), a new window appears.
- in that new window click the button "credits" resp. "info" (only button in that window), a new window appears.
- In the next window click the "update" button (left hand side). The SilverFast serialization dialog appears.
- In the SilverFast serialisation dialog just overwrite the existing number in the field "serial no." with your "SilverFast IT8 activation no".
Click >ok< and IT8 calibration is live. You will find a new button in the vertical line of buttons on the left-hand side of your SilverFast preview window.

for detailed information on how to go about with SilverFast's IT8 calibration function, please visit:

LS.

thank you for your reply, your sales department was quick off the mark as well. I am told that replacement disks are under way.

I was struggling to get things working and ended up doubting everything.

The serialisation procedure is a little intransparent, and it can be quite unclear to the user what causes a failure.

It is reassuring that we appear to have a clear cause,

Thade

Dear Tade !

Please send me all your serialnumbers you got for Version 6 to:

arne.glet@silverfast.com

I will check your problem. I think you take the wrong serialnumber so our copyprotection is active.

kind regards

Arne,

thanks and sorry for the delay in my reply.

The sales department sent me a new CD for IT8, that worked. It seems I was originally sent empty CD's by mistake.

I still have a problem with HDR, I think for the same reason, will ask sales to send me a new CD for that as well.

So I am largely back to working order, until I downloaded SFai 601.19, but I will cover that in a new thread ...
