White backgrounds dull

Can someone tell me how to get a good white on a reflective scan?
I do mostly comps and need to have the paper white without losing the
color. I've used the 'eyedropper' triangle, but it still doesn't come
out really white. I need it to have that white background every time.
I never had this problem with MagicScan.

(I've tried the other controls also. I either get it too much and the color
suffers or too little.)

Any suggestions?

Have you had a chance to download Silverfast's .pdf manual? You can find it here:

You'll want to read section 5.2 (page 106) which deals with setting the Shadow/Highlight points. Also read the section on "Displaying the Brightest and Darkest Point of an Image" which begins on page 113.

Yes, I have it and have been through it.
I still can't seem to get it 'white'. And, sometimes
the preview doesn't match the scan.

I'll get it looking white in the preview and when it
scans it will be darker. ?

Illostraight, I wonder if your problem isn't just a matter of adjusting your general settings. I found this calibration technique very helpful, and even though you have a Umax scanner, perhaps you will too:

Once you're properly calibrated, take a look at Ian Lyon's computer-darkroom website. There are many excellent tutorials about Silverfast, Photoshop, and Color Management. "Basic Image Editing" is a good place to start:
