Just a quick note on this combination. This is not a supported configuration, yet it is working with SilverFast 6.6.0r4c on a new model (late 2008) MacBook Pro. The Ratoc FireWire to SCSI adapter has the Ratoc power supply, and is running through a FireWire 400 cable to a Sonnet FireWire 400 to 800 converter. So there are two converters just to get the Umax PowerLook III to be seen on the MacBook Pro.
I did need to plug all cables in first, and then start the scanner. After that, I confirmed the scanner was in the list of FireWire devices in About This Mac. It shows up as the Ratoc. If it does not show up, sometimes unplugging the Ratoc power adpater, and plugging that back in will get it going. You should hear the scanner cycle when it connects. Other than that, you can go through the Ratoc FR-1 Software Utility; you need to activate, restart, open FR-1 Utility again, then restart one more time, and then the scanner shows up.
So, once again, this is not supported, not conventional, and very unexpected. I have a back-up G4 PowerBook with Mac OS X 10.3.9, which is much more predictable with SilverFast. While this is not a simple configuration, I thought I should share that this combination works. Oh, it also works with my Canon CanoScan FS2710 and SilverFast 6.6.0r4c and the same FireWire cabling with Ratoc FR1SX.
