OSX Problems with Umax Scanner and SilverFast ! PL 1100/1120

Postby LSI_Support » Thu Nov 27, 2003 10:43 am

Umax Powerlook 1120/1100 will NOT work with SilverFast on OSX when the manufacturer scan software is installed.

You have to delete an extension:

location of the extension:
system/library/extensions

the Extension filename is UmaxFireWire.kext This file is protected. Please use the terminal window:

Type:

sudo rm -rf <space>

than drag?n?drop the mentioned extension into the terminal window .

After this press <enter>

After a reboot the scanner works fine.

Addendum:

Please note that the filename of the Umax firewire kernel extension may slightly vary, but is always easily recognized.

For those wondering, where the "Terminal" application can be found:
It is located in the folder /Applications/Utilities/.

With

Code: Select all

ls /system/library/extensions
you will see if an "Umax(whatever).kext" is present in your system blocking SilverFast's access to your Umax scanner.
Please note the sorting: alphabetical, capital lettes first, so "UNC" is listed above "Umax".

Code: Select all

sudo rm -rf /system/library/extensions/Umax*
will let you get rid off the kernel extension, letting you use SilverFast again (reboot is necessary).
You will need the system administrator's password (if set) to remove the kernel extension.

You might want to "ls" the directory contents again to make sure the kernel has indeed been deleted before you restart your computer (necessary, as kernel extensions like this are loaded at boot time).

BTW, the command

Code: Select all

kextstat | grep -v apple
shows all loaded kernel extensions that were not provided by Apple (with the Mac OS X).
The '|' character is entered by holding the option (or: alt) key and pressing the '7' key.

Minor correction: The command "kextstart" should be "kextstat" (no "r") instead.

Dear taruss

of course, thanks for mentioning. I have corrected the typo in my above posting. (Must have been a lapsus lingus due to old Amiga times... ;-))

Dear Panther51

seems to me to be a different problem. The announcement was about SilverFast not finding an Umax PL 1100 or 1120 scanner when the manufacturer's software had been installed and how to resolve this matter.

BTW: The above was an announcement, not a discussion thread.

Please open a support case via the problem report form to let SilverFast support staff help you in resolving your calibration error.
=> https://www.silverfast.com/problemreport/en.html

I would appreciate if you could paste a fresh copy of the SF_Logfile in the problem report. Thanks in advance for your co-operation.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I installed Silverfast SE on G5 dual, OSX 10.4.7, for Umax scanner 1120 and the software ran terribly. Freezes, no line art scanning etc. Followed the instructions to delete the library extension and so far it's ruuning 100% better. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I used the terminal window with the 'drag and drop'.
