negafix and general problems

flatbed scanners for Umax

Hi,
I have some problems with SF 5.5 with my Powerlook 3000(WinMe).Negafix is a nice program and if you have a color cast, you can tweak the curves and histograms within Negafix, what is pretty easy. But when I go to
?curves" within negafix and set a point in the preview, that shall become gray,I`m running into problems. To get the point gray, the manual tells me to pull down the little point within the color field to the gray area. But as soon as I do this, the point I`m trying to get gray is going to be green. And it doesn`t matter, wether I use calibration(IT8) or not.The other problem I have is,when I scan a slide(normal exposed with whites, blacks and normal midtones),the preview(and the resulting scan) gets totally dark.So I have to go to levels(in SF 5.5) and check(and adjust) the histograms. The histogram shows values from 0 until about 150(nothing between 150 and 255),although my slide has excellent highlights, and I have to pull the highlight slider to 150 and even the midtone slider totally to the left(lighter) in order to get a normal scan.(Again calibration doesn`t make a difference;only to colors). In the past,I?ve downloaded every update from your site, only the last one(5.2.0.0) didn`t behave that way.The next problem is that IT8-calibration causes a noticeable red colorcast in the shadows.
Don`t get me wrong,I really love Silverfast, but some bugs really drive me mad.

We are currently checking whether this is a Windows ME or a general Problem. Expect some news or fix shortly.

Also with NegaFix IT8 calibration should always be off!

You are right, calibration must be turned off when using Negafix.I thought I would have tried this, but obviousely haven`t.After turning off IT8,Negafix now works perfectely. But you really should point to this in your Negafix-manual,cause it decides, wether Negafix does work or not.By the way,I would be glad,if you could give me an answer to my topic `manual focus".

Stefan,

The configuration of the CMS dialog has confused more than yourself. In my case leaving the calibration features ON produced "perfectly" good scans. however, simply disabling the Calibration option and leaving the other colour management features as normal produced "very" poor results. It seems that what the President_LSI meant by Calibration should always be OFF is that we MUST configure all of the CMS dilaog options for None. I have modified my tutorial to reflect this information.

http://www.rgbnet.co.uk/ilyons/sf5-nega ... egafix.htm

BTW: I see little difference between calibration being fully ON and fully OFF.

Of course all of the above relates to the Mac version for the poalroid SS120/4000 and HDR.

Ian

Hi Ian,thanks for your reply and by the way for all those excellent tutorials.I tried two different settings with my Powerlook 3000(WinMe).The settings you suggested (none, none, rgb, none, none, perceptual), and
none, automatic(monitor),rgb, none,Adobe RGB,perceptual. Both settings result in 95% identical scans.
I would like to hear an ?official" opinion from the President LSI.Somebody has to know how the settings are supposed to be finally.

Hi Ian,

I'm also one who has learnt so much from your tutorials. As I'm still trying to fully understand colour Mangement, I'm a bit confused by the fact that you need to turn the colourmanagement off. I'm working in Adobe RGB in Photoshop --- how does it know how to convert it and also keep the image visually the same in LS preview and when you bring it into Photoshop if you haven't got automatic enabled? (Haven?t got 5.5 yet, got a query in another post as to which one to download )

I'm sure I've misunderstood something, and I would like to understand it.

Thanks,

Dick

Dick,

Have no doubt that colour management, i.e the two (2) Scanner related options in the CMS dialog MUST be set to NONE.

So far as the settings for "Internal Monitor = Automatic" and the "Internal" working space profile being set to the same as Photoshop then I would tend to agree with you. However, this is NOT what I have been advised. No doubt a definitive answer will be forthcoming. Until such times as it does "None" for everything is the "safest" setting.

Ian,

Thanks for your answer. I will stick with the 'nones'. I really look forward to the clarification and explanation. Having got to the point where I thought I'd got the basics of colour management it's put confusion in my mind. Surely you need a profile of the scanner (produced by IT8 calibration) to convert via a CMS to your chosen Photoshop RGB working space. Hopefuly, all will be explained and become clear.

Thanks again,

Dick

Since when did a negative fim even remotely look like a chrome? Why do you think LaserSoft spent so much time and effort developing NegaFix and 120 plus film profiles and a means to create our own for us to stick a profile based upon a chrome in the data path?

The issue of conversion is NOT relevant here.

Ian,

I'm VERY new to negative scanning; man, have I got a lot to learn. Forgive my ignorance, what is a chrome?

Thanks again,

Dick

Dick,

let me first say that my last mesage reads like I'm sort of slappimg your wrists - it wasn't meant that way.

A "chrome" is a shorthand name given (not everywhere) to a Positive type film. Positive type films have names like AgfaChrome, KodaChrome, EktaChrome, etc.

Ian,

Thanks for the explanation --- another bit of light has been turned on! I can assure you, no offence was taken with regard to the previous post.

Thanks as always for all your help.

NegaFix and IT8 conflict fixed
----------------------------------------------------
The conflict that occured in version 5.5.0 when NegaFix was selected with IT8 calibration on has been fixed.
SilverFast 5.5.0r03 will automatically disable IT8 when NegaFix is selected!

SilverFast Color Management Set-up and Photoshop

Photoshop 5.5

If in the SilverFast CMS section the setting is:
none,none,rgb,none,none,perceptual
Phothshop will convert (match) the image into its set internal color space, e.g. Adobe RGB.
That means, there can be deviations between the prescan image and the result in Photoshop.

With Photoshop 6

In Photoshop 6 if for instance Adobe RGB is set for the internal Photoshop color space, you are not forced to match into the internal color space, you can even have another profile (color space) allocated that you want to match to.

Recommended SilverFast Ai CMS set-up

With or without IT8-Calibration you should have the following settings:

Color Mangement
Scanner -> Internal: None, ColorSync or Calibration
Internal -> Monitor: Automatic
Internal -> Output: RGB or P&P CMYK

Profiles for ColorSync / ICM
Scanner (R+T): your profile if CS or ICM
Internal: Adobe RGB or other (synchronize with Photoshop RGB set-up)
Output/Printer: RGB or profile
Rendering Intend: Perceptional
