When I try to scan negs I get this error message:
----------
Error in Scan Start
Cannot calibrate scanner.
----------
I am using the PS plugin 601r5 and OS X.2.8 on a G4 500 tower with 1.5 G RAM.
Anybody got suggestions?

not working here
I have been experimenting more. My problem appears to happen only when using the NegaFix Kodak Tri X setting ('auto' is checked and other settings are at default).
Sometimes I get an error and sometimes a hard crash where SF and Photoshop 7 completely disappear. Sometimes the scanner can't be found at all by SF.
Is my scanner broken?

dear stevenlyons
I checked SilverFast and the 6450 once more and everything works fine.
Regarding the problems you descibed I think, that you have a harware error. I got the error message " Cannot calibrate the scanner " only in the case, if the position of the image ( or the black transparency holder ) was at the area where the scanner will calibrate itself. Please check this !!
best regards
Christoph

GOT IT!
Well, I am happy to say that I finally figured this out. SilverFast is NOT the problem. I discovered that there is a small horizontal window in the neg holder right above the main window that is apparently used for calibrations. If negs are covering any portion of that small window, it causes an error. I am now getting incredible scans from my negatives. SilverFast is so much better than the OEM software that came with the scanner.
