Unique Pantones?

Is the pantone pallete a defined set of colors or can you derive a pantone color from ANY color? I am having trouble finding the Pantone code for the color I want.

From my knowledge the pantone palette is indeed a defined set of colours, which in the end can be described in LAB values like any other color.

If I may ask a question. If you already know the color you want, what do you need the pantone code for ? For the printer ?
