SF SE, B&W negs, 48bit HDR

Postby neils » Thu Mar 06, 2008 4:44 am

Hi all

When I scan a B&W negative in SF SE as 48bit HDR color or 16 bit HDR grayscale the final image in Photoshop opens as a negative image. Inverting the image brings up a very pale image.

Scanning the same image as 48 to 24 bit leaves with a positive image in PS.

I understand the HDR image is "RAW" but why is the inveted image weak?

I am using a 5400 Minolta scanner.

I think I will get a better scan in 48bit HDR than 48bit to 24bit and the resulting rgb 16bit file. Am I wrong?

Thanks

Neil

Since you've selected 'colour negative', the orange mask in the colour negative will be assumed - hence the relative overexposure by the time you invert back to a positive. You can bring out the image by moving the mid-tone slider in Exposure Levels in PS.

Are you able to do 48bit scans?

That option isn't showing up on my menu despite being on Studio Ai. I can get the 48 bit to 24 ok.

Dear Neil,

for your B&W negative choose "Negative" instead of "Positive", and in the Negafix folder the "Monochrome" profile, but do not scan to HDR data, because then the whole Negafix inversion does not take place.

Best regards
Martin
