Best b&w medium speed film for scanning?

Like many others I'm beevering away at trying to squeeze out good b&w scans. Scanning in 48 bit colour seems to help reduce grain aliasing. But can anyone recommend a 400 speed film that scans well? Kodak T400CN seems to scan a little better but I prefer to use ' real' b&w film. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Ilford HP Plus 400 seems to be a good B&W film for scanning with SilverFast.
