Correct, the Astra 2000U is not supported by SilverFast and we are currently not planing to support this scanner in the future (but this can change;)

The bahviour of SilverFast (moving forward and backward in small steps) can be normal, if you use the highest resolution (4000 dpi) and if you are scanning negatives. The moving forward and backward of the scanner could be normal, if you use high resolutions, like the optical 4000 dpi. In this case, SilverFast simply cannot process the scan data fast enough and the scanner goes into start/stop mode. Strange is, that the entire frame is scanned 4-5 times and that ...

Did SilverFast work correctly under Win98?
Did you install SilverFast on WinXP using the SilverFast installer? The installer also installs the ASPI library, which is needed by SilverFast and which is not part of the XP system.
