I continued fiddling with my configuration after posting this message. Quitting and restarting the application or fiddling with the settings didn't rectify the problem, but, as you suggested, deleting the preferences and restarting did the trick. It hasn't reoccurred.

The ones that crash are 175+ MB. 150 MB is safe, more than that and problems occur.
