48bit HDR mode gives you a raw scan without NegaFix.

...even though the negafix dialogue box shows up? Should I close negafix, or does it nto matter because maybe it is disabled even though it shows up?

Thanks Christoph

One quick follow-up:

When scanning negatives in 48bit HDR mode, does Negifix get used during the scan, or only in the post scan processing in HDR?

Thanks

Thank you for your reply, but I think you missed my point, and the rest of my question. Eric had confirmed SF would be offering a Negifix that would additionally incorporate calibration, so the variance from one scanner to another (even the same model) would be factored into the scan/post-scan proce...

Frame Offset problem with Nikon 4000 ED

Batch scanning negatives on a 4000 ED with either SF AI or NokonScan, some of the frames do not fall between the edges of the film (i.e. overlap onto the adjacent frame on one side and cut short on the other). Oddly, this seems sporadic and irregular. For instance on a 4 frame strip, frame 1,2,4 wer...

Dear Caleb. The NEF format is designed for Nikons digital cameras. HDR can?t read NEF, but DCPro can. The normal 48-bit from the scanner do contain all data you need for post processing. You can use AI, NikonScan or v**s**n. It? s simple a question, which software you like best. Of course we would ...

Gregory: Thank you again for taking the time/effort to write such a full/clear reply! This problem of frame offset is a real pain!! I tested a 4 frame strip and in BOTH AI AND Nikon Scan. Images 1,3,4 were fine. Image 2 was offset to the point where I saw part of the adjacent frame!!!!! Boo Hiss!!!!...

Dear Caleb. We are currently working on exactly what you proposed. NegaFix will be separated into: 1. calibration and 2. apply of film curves in the future. Eric. Thanks Eric, this is good news. When do you expect this to occur? Will it effect HDR and DCPro, as well as AI? Will the primary "impact ...

GREAT!! When?

...final question (maybe) :P

Is there any strong reason I should not scan in 48bit NEF for post processing in DCPro vs the other options? Intuitively, it would seem logical to use the scanner manufacturer's raw format over any other format.

Thanks again

Thanks you for your reply. Yes HiRePP soulds very useful. I understand you can add this to existing scans. Does this include scans from other manufacturers? Also, will DCPro support Nikon's 48bit raw format called NEF? If so, will post processing with CDPro be the same as HDR is with TIFF raw files?...

I seem to be the only person using SF to batch scan rolls and rolls (or strips as the case may be) of negative film with the goal of building an archive of both the 48-bit HDR tiff images and the corresponding 24-bit screen size jpg images. ...well make that two of us! Thank you for your reply. If,...

Here is a related question:

Some users prefer v**s**n (for whatever personal reason) to AI. Is there any reason the quality would be better or worse by using either of the following two workflows FOR NEGATIVES:
1) ViewScan 48bit Raw>SF HDR
2) SF AI 48bit HDR output>HDR?

Thanks

This is a most interesting post! I need to scan/archive 5,000 color negatives on a 4000 ED. I had intended to use AI set to RAW 48bit HDR output, and process post scan in HDR with Job Manager. I had been thinking I might get a more "true" RAW scan by using Nikon's native NEF raw format through Nikon...

Mow that AI outputs 16-it grayscale, and they've added better B&W NegaFix profiles, I've changed, simplified, and improved my workflow. Now I: 1. Use Negafix (with the great new Ilford profiles) 2. Adjust Exposure, then Midtones and Black and White Point. 2. Scan into 16-bit Grayscale. 3. Use Photo...
