Hi,

I'm using Mac OS 9 & Polaroid Sprintscan 4000, and was able to use Silverfast Ai 5.1 alright (with some crashes), and I've been unable to get any version of Silverfast Ai after 5.1 to open. Version 5.2 and the demo of v5.5 have never worked. I've tried opening them from within Photoshop 3.0, Photoshop 6 demo, Photoshop Elements and Adobe PhotoDeluxe. In every case, I get the same error: COULD NOT COMPLETE THE IMPORT COMMAND BECAUSE AN ERROR OCCURED LOADING THE PLUG-IN.

Or I the program crashes when I try to do a Silverfast import, and I get "Error 1,010."

I tried installing the 5.2 upgrade with the original CD-ROM in the drive, with no success. I have also tried uninstalling all the Silverfast files and installing the SF Ai 5.5 demo, also with no luck.

I have tried doing a clean install of the Mac OS (I was using 9.1 before, now just OS 9), and I have tried moving the Silverfast folder from the Import/Export folder to the Plug-Ins folder. No luck. I have also tried installing Silverfast 5.2 as a TWAIN plug-in, but I still get errors and can't launch Silverfast. What is wrong? Please help!

PLEASE NO DOUBLE POSTINGS !!!!!! LSI ADMIN

Peter,

First of all you should trade your Mac for a PC - Ok, just kidding. It sounds like you've done almost everything to fix the problem, but here's something eles to try - if you haven't already.

Reinstall (or Clean Install) the Polariod drivers - or better yet, download the latest versions from Polaroids site and try that. It sounds like a hardware driver problem to me, if you're doing clean installs and all. Even though Silverfast is different that Polaroid's scanning software, it still uses the same Mac hardware driver, even the TWAIN version.

Also, make sure that you're installing Silverfast in the correct folder.

Try those things, and if they don't work, maybe Ian Lyons can help - I believe he owns a Sprintscan 4000 as well

-Ian

Dear Peter A,
I believe the problem is of a different nature. You state that you use SilverFast on Photoshop Elements and on Photo de Luxe.
If you did install the SilverFast "Photoshop plug-in" module, you were misled by the names of - I'd say Adobe!
SilverFast comes on every CD twice!
- as native plug-in to Adobe Photoshop
- as general TWAIN plug-in for almost every image processing application.

SilverFast Ai as Photoshop plug-in is exlusively for use with Adobe Photoshop, and no other application!!!!
Well Adobe issued that "Photoshop Elements" product, which - in fact - sounds just suitable for SilverFast Photoshop plug-in. BUT IT IS NOT!!!
Peter, use SilverFast TWAIN for all applications other than Adobe Photoshop.

Thanks for your suggestion. I followed your instructions, but it's still not working...

I uninstalled everything relating to Silverfast. I then tried:

a) to install the Silverfast Ai 5.5 TWAIN demo (SFTWE-5.5.0D08 for Polaroid) with the original 5.1 CD in my CD-ROM drive.

Whenever I started ANY applicable program (Adobe Photoshop Elements, Photoshop 6.0 tryout version, PhotoDeluxe or Photoshop 3.0), the program crashed at startup as soon as it tried to load the TWAIN driver. I got a Mac OS error 1,010.

The power to the scanner was ON. And by the way, v**s**n and PolaColor Insight work fine.

b) I tried again deleting everything and installing the Silverfast Ai 5.2 TWAIN upgrade (SF TW US-5.2.0r05 for Polaroid), again with the CD-ROM in the drive.

I got the same error when starting up those programs.

Yet for some reason, 5.1 will work. Is there something I need to update -- a very recent version of QuickTime or something?

In spite of this problem, I love my Mac, by the way.

Dear Peter,
this is likely to be necessary. As I understand it you said:"SilverFast Ai5.1 is now running o.k." is that correct?
If yes, on which of the host programs (you used) is that SilverFastAi5.1 running o.k.?

It might be helpful if you contact LaserSoft support (us) by e-mail, and attach us a text-file-report of your Apple System Profiler (File > new report > tic: mamory overview, hw overview, production info, devices & volumes, extensions and then view report as text document<end bold> and send it to us.

Yes, that's correct

All of them -- Photoshop 3, PhotoDeluxe, Photoshop Elements, and the Photoshop 6 demo. However, I was unable to do a 48-bit HDR or 16-bit HDR scan in the Photoshop 6 demo -- I had to use Photoshop 3.

Will do. Thanks for your responses!

Has there been any resolution to this issue? I have the same problem with the new 5.2.0r05 Polaroid update (error message that the import plug in could not load). I'm running Photoshop 6.1 on my upgraded Beige G3 with OS 9.1. Version 5.1.2r02 loads ok (and will operate the scanner) but seems to have compatibilty issues with Photoshop 6.1. As soon as I update to the new version, the plug in will not load. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chad

You will need to "completely" remove the old version of SilverFast. Leave NOTHING behind. Then insert you old CD into the computer - Do NOT install the old version. Now run the NEW version installer and all should be well. So long as the old CD is in the computer SilverFast will install.

Actually, I was able to remedy this problem somewhat. First of all, some background: I was using OS 9.1 and Photoshop 5.0.

As it turns out, Silverfast appears to install several drivers for the hardware, including something called "Polaroid Firewire" or "Polaroid FW" or something like that. I believe this appears in the Extensions folder. There may also be a "Polaroid USB" driver extension as well. Anyway, my Sprintscan 4000 is strictly a SCSI machine, and when I deleted these files, voil?! SilverFast worked! (Actually, I think it was only the Silverfast HDR plugin that worked, but the Silverfast Ai 5.5 TWAIN driver worked. Or maybe it was vice-versa... sorry, I have it installed on my other computer, not the one I'm using at the moment.) Can't remember which release it was. But in any case, look for these extraneous driver files and see if deleting them solves your problems, and be sure to try the TWAIN drivers as well as the Photoshop plugins.

Thanks a lot Peter-A. I had been in touch with LaserSoft and tried all sorts to try to get Silverfast to work. I put the issue on the back burner until now when I want to produce some quality scans. Removing the unwanted extensions definitely gets the v5.5.2 plug-in working with Photoshop 6.0.1 in OS8.6. For the record I removed the Polaroid SS4000FWDriver,Polaroid SSFWDriver, Polaroid SSFWExpert, Polaroid SSFWFamily and Polaroid SSFWFamily extension.

Cheers

Whoops - the last extension listed should read Polaroid SSUSBDriver.
