suddenly scanner no longer scans correctly

I have been scanning with the Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 with silverfast ai 5.5 for about a year. The scanner was calibrated with the IT8 slide. I have Windows XP. During a scan 2 days ago, the system froze up. I had to reboot the computer so I new I would lose that scan. After a few scan attempts yielded nothing but a blank black screen, I figured I lost all previous settings, so I set about resetting the preferences under options. I attempted to recalibrate with the It8 slide, but it comes out extremely dark. I also have silverfast ai 5.1 and I am not getting these dark scans, so I don't think it is in the hardware. Anyone have any idea why I am suddenly scanning so dark (it is really dark, you can barely make out the image). mark P

Mark,

You seem to be saying that SilverfAst 5.1 works but 5.5 doesn't. Delete SilverFast 5.5 and reinstall; that way everything that might be corrupted is gone.
