Hi,

The Polaroid web site indicates that a new glass slide carrier is available for the SS120 scanner. They also indicate that to use the new carrier, a firmware upgrade is required as is an update to their scanning software, both of which are available for download. My question: Will Silverfast work with the new carrier and if not, is a Silverfast upgrade planned?

New glass carrier for Polaroid SS120 and SilverFast Ai

As soon as we have got the new glass carrier from Polaroid, we will adapt SilverFast Ai to support that.

BTW,
I ordered and received one of these carriers from Polaroid. The focus improvement for the SS120 is phenomenal! If you own an SS120, this carrier is a must! Highly recommended!!

Postby millennyem » Sun Sep 08, 2002 4:19 am

i just got the class carrier for the sprintscan 120 and i am very happy with it except . . . the Insight software is frustrating. please please please help us! i did find that silverfast will allow me to do scans with the glass carrier. would this be a mistake because of focus issues?

Glass Carrier

Postby cew3jsm » Mon Sep 09, 2002 3:31 am

I have been using SF6 with the glass carrier without problems. There is a bit of guess work to get the frame selection right, but mostly, I just put the frame I want to scan at the front of the glass carrier. Seems to work fine. I don't know how it affects the focus algrithms, but my scans have been very sharp.

BTW, using the glass carrier naturally results in a few more dust spots. Combining minimal SF6 SRD during the scan, and then using Polaroid DSR post scan, most of my scans are nearly dust free and only minimal PS work is required for the rest.

Thanks Silverfast for another great product!

Glass Film Holder

I will wait to upgrade to SF 6.0 until they get support for the glass holder built in.

Is the glass carrier available in the UK? Can anyone recommend a supplier in the US or Europe (the polaroid website suggests calling them, but wondered if the group could recommend a store)

I purchased mine directly from Polaroid. I couldn't find any stores, local, mailorder, or internet, that carried them.

Finally we managed to test SilverFast with the glass carrier, and found no problems after we made an upgrade of the scanner firmware to v1.33.
The Carrier is recognized by SilverFast identical to the 120mm carrier.

6 x 24cm format

Postby mmc1019 » Tue Nov 12, 2002 4:50 pm

Was wondering if there is any way to get Silverfast/5.5-2r08 to recognize the 6 x 24 cm, as Insight does, to allow prescan and selection from a full strip of film avoiding problem of frame alignment w/ 6x4.5 format?

Would/does SF 6 give this function?

TIA
Mark

I have 6 and was using 5.5. As far as I have been able to discover neither supports the 6x24 preview that Insight does. What I do is line up the end of the first frame with the red "1" on the normal med format holder, or a similar spot on the glass holder. Then preview using 6x6. You can get the first 3 frames that way. If you have more than that on your strip (I use 4) you just flip it over. There is actually some advantage to this over the full length preview in terms of speed.

jeffj,

Thanks for the reply. Have figured the gyrations as you mentioned, and may get used to it. Was just hoping that either LS or Pol would get a fix for this as it would help me greatly with batch scanning.

How do you like SF 6 ?

I'm not sure it's worth the extra money. I need to play around more with the different noise and grain filters I guess. I find so far, that the seem to make the image softer when I use them. There were some bugs in the early versions of 6, but they seem to have those stomped out now.

1. I bought the glass carrier, but then sent it back simply because I could easily see the antinewton pattern at anything greater than 50% magnification (scanning 35mm pano negs).
2. Was I doing something wrong? Is there some special way to scan with the glass carrier?

Thanks. Harry
