I downloaded the TWAIN demo version of Silverfast SE 6.01 for my recently purchased Primefilm 1800u film scanner.
I am able to scan a positive film at 1800 dpi, using the default settings with only a little adjustment to the histogram. However, when zooming in, blocks of about 8x8 pixels become visible. I expect that to be the reason for the fact that the resulting picture doesn't look that great.
Scanning a negative, which is the main reason for buying a film scanner, fails completely. After the prescan, a red picture turns up, and when saving it, it becomes yellow/gray. I can barely recognize the original photo. This results looks as if the Densitometer has been set to weird values, but I did not use it initially. I tried several different settings, but they all resulted in an ugly picture. What's wrong here? Is it my limited knowledge of the Densitometer or other settings? I have heard about people getting great results using Silverfast with their Primefilm 1800, so I guess the software itself works fine.
Another thing that worries me is the sound that the scanner produces during prescans. It sounds like it has a mechanical problem, but this problem does not occur when using the CyberView software that was supplied with the scanner. Thy way that Silverfast is controlling the scanner must be causing this.
Just let me know if you want to see my sample pictures, so that I can e-mail them.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Color problems with negs on PF1800...
Hi!
I am also getting terrible colors when scanning negatives on my PF1800. I use Photoshop 5.5 on Mac OS 9; will there be an update to the Mac version any time soon? I must admit I am rather disappointed with the "upgrade" to version 6; I get significantly better results with CyberView than with Silverfast with negatives
I have just scanned a nice photo of a black-blue city, with pink clouds!
On a side note: I was looking forward to the grain reduction in the new version; however, I can't find it?! Is GANE available in SilverFast SE? I can't find it noted anywhere that this feature is not available...
Thanks,
Povl
