UMAX PowerLook 180 issues

Postby puv » Fri Apr 11, 2003 10:27 am

Hi

Just purchased one.
The main purpose was to digitize all the old black&white films in rolls.
(This is the only model I found that supports film rolls)

Was really surprised that the software supplied (SilverFast 6 Ai)
does not allow me to position the film on a desired frame.
I have to make an overview scan of all the film, even if I need only
one frame from it!

Besides, if I scan a color negative film, then overview scan works OK.
But if it try to overview B&W film, it takes ages! And the result
is terrible: it could not find frame boundaries! As a result I have
a set of half-frames!

Then, I cannot manually set exposure time. If I scan a slightly dark
positive, it appears terribly dark after scanning.
The only solution is to use post-processing that's bad.

And finally: I have to scan B&W negatives in 16bit HDR greyscale.
Otherwise it tries to handle some color mask (which is absent on B&W)
and the result is no good again.

So, shortly what I miss:
- position film on a desired frame, or desired length from the beginning
of the roll
- recognition of frame boundaries on B&W negatives.
- manual setting of exposure time
- better handling of B&W negatives. I don't want to post-process
16bit HDR greyscale all the time.

Seems like your software is the only one that supports this scanner.
So I have to beg you to include the mentioned above features into
your software.
And I could not understand why you did not include these obvios
things... I really expected them when was opening the box...
