my .jpeg files cannot be imported in iPhoto

Postby mic76it » Fri Feb 19, 2010 6:21 pm

dear all,

I have been using Silver Fast to scan my films.
I cannot import my .jpg files into iPhoto.
it says the format is not recognised.

I tried opening the images using preview, and then save them with another name.
but it still doesn't work.

the only workaround is to save these pics as .tiff images,
but I do not want to follow this path: it will require 10 times of disk space.

is there another way to import these pics into iPhoto ?

please let me know,
I have already digitalised a huge number of pics ...

thanks a lot

regards

Michele

Dear Michelle,

is it possible that you safe th files as jpeg 2000 rather than jpg ?

This would cause the described behavior as iPhoto does not support jpeg 2000 but normal jpeg files should be accepted by iPhoto.

Dear Thomas,

thanks for your reply.

I have tried to use all the options for the .jpeg (standard, progressive, 2000) but none of them did work.

I have submitted a bug report to Apple.
It doesn't make sense to me that my files can be opened using "Preview" (a Mac OS software that opens .pdf, pics and other documents) but cannot be opened using iPhoto.

I am a bit worried, since I have already digitalised hundreds of pics using my Plustek scanner... :(

Thanks for any other help you might give to me.
Perhaps if your Company would take contact with Apple to help/allow them to recognise the formats you are writing your images, it would be really great.

Cheers

Michele

Dear Michele,

there is one other setting that could render our jpegs unusable in iPhoto and most other applications.
This is when you do a 48Bit Scan that is ment to use with our SilverFast HDR Software. But if you woud have created an 48Bit jpeg it would not be opened in preview either.

I also have had this issue.

The jpegs will load into PhotoShop and Apple preview but not into IPhoto as described above.

What is strange is it is not an issue with all the files.

When my client called and told me this. I had to send him the tiff files which were the original scans.

I had converted the tiffs to jpegs using the batch function in PhotoShop after they were scanned.

It appears to be an issue 10.6.2. Hopefully 10.6.3 will correct it.

taking this into account it really does not seem to be an SilverFast but an OSX or iPhoto issue,
does it happen with different jpgs that are converted in batch mode from tiff via Photoshop ?

After sending the questionable jpegs to Apple on 3/13/2010 as requested in a phoncon with Apple I received a phone call back.

Apple confirms that it is an issue within IPhoto and not with the jpegs created with SilverFast or PhotoShop.

When I get a resolution I will pass it along to LaserSoft and PhotoShop..

I had this problem and "solved" it. iPhoto is desginged to work with RGB images. You can import B&W images into iPhoto, but they need a supported color profile to be able to be read. Most scanners will default the scan of a B&W photo to a Black & White Color profile, rather than RGB. If you are using a real silver halide film designate the file as Color of some type before you make your scan. Then you will have no problems. Go to Apple.com > Support > Discussions > iPhoto '09 > Installing and using iPhoto '09 Topic: Interesting iPhoto "unrecognized file" issue. Before I learned of this solution, there was unimaginable frustration.
