Panther and HP 4c

Postby rkusa » Sun Nov 30, 2003 6:53 am

I finally gave up waiting for LaserSoft to add the HP scanners, or test them, or respond with any meaningful status of HP scanners, and went ahead and installed it anyway.

Result so far:

SilverFast SE 6.1.0r5 does not see my HP 4c scanner at all. Panther System Profiler sees it. Terminal search sees it.

When I check the SilverFast log file, it still shows SilverFast as:

Version : SilverFast E-6.0.1r35 (iSE) Serial ?LaserSoft Imaging AG 1995-2002

I've reinstalled the new version 3 times and it still won't show the latest version in the log file after the error. The log file is current because the date and time it shows in the log are correct.

I don't know why it's not showing that the version is the new one. I wonder if that's the problem. I did throw away the old version of the plug-in when it was left over from the new installation (it left the old one in the SilverFast folder). I do show that the SF Launcher was updated to show it was modified today, but the SF_App still shows a 2002 date. I don't know if that was supposed to have been updated with the new version or not.

I have an Adaptec 2930CU SCSI card, updated to Panther 10.3.1, repaired permissions, and updated prebinding. Nothing has helped. According to what I've read, v**s**n works with this. Guess I'll have to check that out unless you have any better ideas.

Dear rkusa

We noticed this problem under Panther with several scanners.
This will be fixed with our newest release 6.1.0r7. 8)
Please check our download area. This version will come soon and try a Demo version.

best regards

Christoph

Still no HP 4C scanner

Postby rkusa » Thu Dec 11, 2003 4:58 am

I downloaded the latest SilverFast version that is supposed to be Panther-ready. Despite the fact that the System Profiler sees the scanner on my Adaptec 2930 bus, and it even shows up in the SF log, the plugin still says that it can't locate the scanner. I reinstalled, restarted, repaired permissions, changed the SCSI IDs...all with the same result. The Profiler and SF log see the scanner showing the correct ID, but the plugin doesn't see it.

I realize you're very busy, but I stlll haven't received any response via email with any suggestions. I notice someone else is having the exact result with a different scanner: the scanner shows up everywhere but the plugin. There's got to be something being missed somewhere.

Looking forward to a working revision...v**s**n is much less pleasant to use.

rkusa,

I am going through the same ordeal that you are. I am begining to believe that this software isn't tested with these scanners. You would think when these updates are released that the would test the scanners with the update rather than say they should work. :(

"I am begining to believe that this software isn't tested with these scanners."
Hello,
Dear cdssh.

reading this post I just had to comment:
We @ LSI do NOT believe it is a very smart idea to have our customers function as "beta-testers" for our software. But to get back to your problem.
SCSI in Combination with MacOSX 10.3 causes various Problems at the time which we were able to verify in internal testing procedures. Not all of these issues can be solved on behalf of LaserSoft Imaging since many SCSI-card manufacturers have not provided 10.3 compatible drivers.
As a matter of course we are strengthening our efforts to provide quick solutions:
1.) Update the SCSI-card drivers to OSX compatible drivers
2.) Check if the Scanner will work with a different SCSI-card model. i.e. the ACard 6712U has solved many problems with many scanners.

At the moment we are testing a very promising Firewire to SCSI-adapter which so far works with a few scanners. Please check the forum for more news regardind SCSI and OSX.

Kind regards.

HP4c and Panther 10.3.1

Postby carlbutler » Fri Dec 12, 2003 11:37 pm

I too am in the same situation with a Scanjet 4c connected to an Adaptec 2906 which has worked just fine through all the stages of OS's from 8.6 to Jaguar 10.2.6.
Just upgraded to Panther v10.3.1 and installed the latest Silverfast SE 6.1.0r7. And... now, Silverfast can't find the scanner.
The card shows up in my G4 933 System profiler as does a couple of scsi hard drives I have connected.
Out of curiosity, I tried v**s**n and it had no problem whatsoever in finding my scanner and completiing some test scans.
I feel confident that they will find a fix for this soon at Silverfast.. That's a big cheer guys! Come on now... Don't let us down!
